To use the ZanVibali system (Foreign Travel Permit System) as a public servant in Zanzibar, you must follow an automated process managed by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.

Registration

Before you can apply for a permit, you must be registered in the system.

• Contact Your IT Officer: Registration is typically handled by the ICT Officer (Afisa TEHAMA) of your specific ministry, local council, or government institution.
• Provide Details: You will need to provide your full names, mobile number, government email address, and your official title/department.
• Account Activation: Once registered, you will receive an automated email with instructions to log in and set a secure password. Passports usually require at least 8 characters, including letters, numbers, and special symbols.

Application Process

• Once your account is active, you can submit an application via the ZanVibali portal.
• Login: Enter your government email and password on the portal.
• Complete the Form: Select the "Kibali cha Safari" (Travel Permit) option. You must specify if the travel is for official government business or private matters.
• Attach Documents: You must upload supporting documents such as invitation letters, meeting notices, or study admission letters.
• Submit Early: It is highly recommended to submit your application at least 14 days before your planned departure to allow for administrative review.

Approval and Tracking

Status Monitoring: You can log in at any time to check the status of your application (e.g., "Pending," "Approved," or "Rejected").
Emergency Permits: The system includes an emergency feature for urgent official travel or medical reasons.
Final Permit: Once approved, the travel permit is issued electronically, reducing the need for manual paper processing.

Important for 2026 Travelers

If you are a resident or citizen traveling back to Zanzibar from abroad, note that since late 2024 and continuing into 2026, Zanzibar requires mandatory inbound travel insurance (approx. $44 USD) for entry, which must be purchased from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
