Motor Vehicle Valuation System (UMVVS) FAQ

Explore Frequently Asked Questions about Motor Vehicle Valuation System (UMVVS).

How do I check the tax value of a car using the TRA UMVVS system?

To check the customs value, visit the official TRA UMVVS portal (gateway.tra.go.tz/umvvs). Select your vehicle's Make, Model, Body Type, Year of Manufacture, and Engine Capacity. The system will generate a Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) which acts as the base for calculating import taxes.

Why is the TRA valuation higher than my purchase price?

TRA uses the UMVVS database to prevent under-invoicing. If the price on your commercial invoice is lower than the value in the UMVVS system, TRA will use the higher UMVVS value as the 'Customs Value' to calculate your Import Duty, Excise Duty, and VAT.

What happens if I import a car older than 8 years?

Vehicles older than 8 years are subject to an additional 'Dumping Fee' (Excise Duty on Age). While the standard UMVVS valuation gives the base value, you will be charged an extra 15% to 30% excise duty on top of standard taxes for importing an older vehicle.

What should I do if my vehicle model is not listed in UMVVS?

If your specific car model or year is not listed in the dropdown menu, you cannot get an instant online valuation. You must contact the TRA Customs Helpdesk or visit a physical TRA office where officers will use a similar model for comparison or perform a physical inspection to determine the value.
